Folkestone West and the disused bay

Platforms

Any Station needs platforms, here is how I made mine.

I have used 2 methods, for the long straight platforms of Folkestone West I used some 18mm batoning that I had, it was more or less the right width and cut to length was just right.

For Ramsgate I used 18mm MDF. To get the shape I cut some wallpaper lining paper to shape, to fit between the rails> Then using a pencil against the side of a carriage I drew along the mark that would be the platform size. Once cut out I pasted it to the MDF, left to dry and cut with a Jigsaw.

Banana anyone?

Some light sanding later and platforms are done. Took about an hour.

Once painted with Grey primer they are perfect for what I wanted.. a temporary platform shape that will allow for a more detailed approach to be made, specifically on the sides, at a later date.

At Folkestone West I used the MDF to make up the surrounding land to the station to platform height. I also cut a bay which is what was once a loading bay but now no longer used, still there to be found for those that know it's there.

Folkestone West Upgrade

It had always been my intention that the MDF platforms were temporary, so here is the upgrade.

I used the Peco platform sides as they are a good representation of southern concrete sides and cheap enough not to break the bank for my needs, first job was to paint them

I then shifted the postition of the MDF slightly and attached the peco edging to the sides and papier machéd the surface

Once the papier Maché was dry I covered if with a watered down coat of polyfiller, this gives a nice textured surface

Then this was painted with a base grey coat, further painting will be done to add detail

Remember that bay? I scratch built a pair of sides for it from Slaters Bricksheet and plasticard
